THE FOUNDATION: The main purpose of the World Gay Foundation NPC / NPO (NPC registration number: 2016/302304/08) (NPO registration number: 181-515) are to assist the greater Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) community, in supporting causes and charitable events, providing education and awareness programs, and creating an ethos of care within the community and beyond. To achieve its objectives, the organizations will mainly rely on sponsorship and donation income from the public and corporate sector. The organizations value the use of spectacle, pageantry, theatre, creativity, recreation, music, design, multi-media, and other forms of artistic expression, to create LGBTQ+ awareness/celebration, eliminate stigma and promote pride-consciousness as a philosophy for living and being well.
THE EVENT: Mr Gay World Southern Africa is searching for a unique and multi-faceted gay male to represent South Africa. What is required of him is no small feat. He needs to be switched on, kind, passionate about change, charismatic and an all-rounder who can function consistently as an ambassador and spokesperson for the LGBTQ community. He needs to be the voice for many who are not being heard, which requires a compassionate and considerate nature.
The delegate chosen needs to embody magnetism and sex appeal while still maintaining a good head on his shoulders. As with any pageant, he needs to be attractive, but many qualities make someone attractive, and not all of them are external.
ABOUT: The Mr Gay World Southern Africa competition replaces the previous competition to select the South African delegate for Mr Gay World and the umbrella of Mr Gay World Southern Africa we have always intended to send representatives for South Africa as well as other Southern African countries to Mr Gay World, should suitable candidates be found to represent their respective countries. Unfortunately, our financial and logistical restraints currently do not enable us to do so. We hope to secure the funds to make this a reality soon so that we can provide other Southern African countries with a platform for their own LGBTQ ambassador too. We would appreciate any help that can be offered to make this a reality.
Including entrants of colour and other demographics that represent the majority of Southern Africans is essential to us. Mr Gay World Southern Africa must be a true reflection of this country. Stigma and social pressure within the communities they reside in have prevented many young men of colour from entering due to fear, resulting in them being in the minority of entrants until recent years. This must and will change. We have had two South African entrants to go on to win the title of Mr Gay World in the past, and we look forward to facilitating the reign of a future Mr Gay World of colour too.
VISIBILITY OF LGBTQ+ CITIZENS
CAUSE: The LGBTQ+ Community is still marginalized in many pockets of South African society, and within this community as a whole, there are subgroups such as the Trans community and the lesbian community in rural areas, which are particularly hard hit by prejudice, violence and hate crimes. This fundraiser aims to function as a platform that will allow those in the LGBTQ+ community (and their allies) who do enjoy some kind of privilege, ability, or influence, to be able to help these less fortunate members of the community. It aims to bring about cohesion and support, and the emancipation and strengthening of the community as a whole. If we can help one another, we all benefit.
GOAL: To raise awareness of hate crimes against vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as amplify, remember and celebrate the positive contribution of LGBTQ+ in larger society.
PURPOSE: To raise practical financial assistance that directly benefits Non-Profit Organizations that are dedicated to working with the LGBTQ+ communities in different regions of South Africa. Every year a particularly vulnerable group of our community will be identified and funds will be raised to uplift this constituency in order to benefit us all in the long-term.
